How to choose 29-inch MTB wheels

29-inch has become the benchmark standard, from cross-country to enduro. The choice is less about diameter, already determined by your frame, than about four compatibility standards and internal rim width.

The four compatibility standards to check

• Front axle : 15x110 mm Boost on almost all recent mountain bikes, 15x100 mm or 20x110 mm on older models and in downhill.
• Rear axle : 12x148 mm Boost today, 12x142 mm on the previous generation, 12x157 mm Super Boost on certain enduro bikes, 9x135 mm quick release on older MTBs.
• Freehub body : Shimano HG for 8 to 11-speed cassettes, Micro Spline for Shimano 12-speed, SRAM XD for 12-speed Eagle.
• Disc mount : Center Lock or 6-bolt. An adapter is available in one direction only.

Internal rim width

• 25 to 27 mm : cross-country and marathon, with 2.20 to 2.35 tyres.
• 29 to 30 mm : trail and all-mountain, the most versatile range, for 2.35 to 2.50 tyres.
• 30 mm and above : enduro and downhill, to support wide tyres at low pressure.
• A wider rim provides better sidewall support for the tyre and allows running lower pressures, at the cost of a few tens of grams.

Aluminium or carbon?

• Aluminium : absorbs impacts, can be repaired, and replaced at a reasonable price. A buckled aluminium rim can often be trued.
• Carbon : laterally stiffer and lighter, acceleration is noticeably different. However, a severe impact means replacing the rim.
• In enduro and downhill, the choice mainly depends on your terrain and your replacement budget.

Single wheel or wheelset?

Replacing a single wheel after damage makes perfect sense, provided you maintain matching axle spacing and disc mount standards. For a complete bike upgrade, buying a wheelset is often cheaper than two separate purchases and ensures consistent handling front and rear.

Electric mountain bikes

The weight and torque of an e-MTB put far more stress on wheels. Choose e-bike approved models: thicker rims, reinforced hubs, often 32 spokes. The E-Deemax, E-Crossride and DT Swiss H series ranges are designed for this use.
