Bike cassette – Set of sprockets

The bike cassette refers to the set of sprockets used when road cycling. The cassette is fitted onto the freehub body at the rear wheel hub. Its role is to drive the rear wheel by recovering the energy generated by pedalling via the chainset and chain. The smaller the sprocket, the greater the development (distance covered in one crank revolution), but the harder the effort. You change sprocket and therefore development according to the terrain and speed using the rear derailleur. From 7, 8, 9 to 10 speeds, in recent years we have moved to cassettes and indeed complete groupsets going up to 11 speeds!

 

Bike cassette – An important choice

Traditionally, a road bike cassette has a starting point (smallest sprocket) of 11 or 12 teeth and 21, 23, 25 or 28 teeth for the largest sprocket. The choice of cassette, and therefore the sprockets, is made according to the terrain you are used to riding on and your level. It is obvious that someone who is used to riding flat criteriums will not choose the same cassette as a fan of long-distance mountain riding!

 

Bike cassette – A component to keep an eye on

A bike cassette, if well maintained, can last several thousand kilometres. Wear is characterised by the rounding of the teeth and the appearance of chain skipping despite a well-adjusted rear derailleur. It is recommended to change the cassette and chain at the same time to maintain smooth transmission and avoid wearing out your new cassette or new chain too quickly.
