Description

This GARMIN Varia Radar RCT 715 radar and camera rear light is an essential solution to improve cyclist safety, keeping you clearly visible in all circumstances, day and night, and alerting you to the arrival of a vehicle behind you from a distance of 140 metres (up to 8 vehicles at the same time)! When a vehicle is detected, the light illuminates to clearly signal your presence.

On this new model, a next-generation camera is integrated to record journeys. Incidents are automatically detected, and videos before, during and after the event are stored. The device can capture footage in 1080p or 720p to extend battery life. Recording can also be started manually via an Edge computer or the Varia app. Access to these videos is very straightforward thanks to this app. The included 16GB SD card offers generous storage capacity.

This accessory can equip a city/touring bike or a road bike; it is very simply installed on the seatpost thanks to the included mounting kit.

The waterproof housing design has been reworked to integrate even better into the aesthetics of road bikes. The indicator light is now visible at 220°, and the system can still be used in continuous mode (4 hours battery life) or flashing mode (6 hours battery life). In daylight, the cyclist is visible up to 1600 metres thanks to a light output of 60 lumens in flashing mode.

In addition to the audible alert, this system pairs perfectly with an Edge GPS or Wahoo Element, Bolt and ROAM, which will visually warn you of what is approaching from behind. It is also compatible with Android and iOS smartphones via the Varia Mobile App. The Radar also works with the Komoot, RidewithGPS smartphone apps and others to come. In addition to the audible alert, approaching vehicles are indicated by means of a colour code (Green = all clear, Orange = vehicle approaching, Red = vehicle approaching at high speed).

Expensive but good quality and reassuring

"I'd never used radar, but I wanted a camera to film in the event of an accident. I chose this one for the 3 functions (light, camera, radar) because I didn't want to multiply the brackets and devices attached to my seatpost. The price is high, but in the end I'm happy with it: the resolution is sufficient to read car plates during the day (but it's not the resolution of a famous actioncam), the capacity is several hours (6h at least) and the radar function is amazing if you have a Garmin GPS (or a smartphone, but I haven't tried it). You're warned of oncoming cars from behind before you hear them: long straights on main roads (when you can't avoid them), small bends on country roads... ... . You can see them approaching with 2 different colors according to their speed. There's a countdown to indicate the number of cars. The (good) quality is there: sturdiness, finish, fixing accessories... . In short, it's expensive but it reassures me by warning me of the arrival of cars, and "de-stresses" me a bit, especially for solo outings. I don't know if it works as well with a group (I haven't tried it)."
