How to choose your MTB tubeless valves

The valve is the cheapest part of a tubeless setup and the most common cause of problems: slow punctures, inability to inflate, valve core clogged by sealant. Two criteria are all you need to make the right choice: length and base shape.

What length?

• 35 to 40 mm : standard MTB rims with a depth of under 25 mm. This length covers the vast majority of MTB wheels.
• 50 mm : mid-profile carbon rims.
• 60 mm and above : deep-section rims, mainly for road and gravel.
• The rule: at least 15 to 20 mm must protrude from the rim so the pump head attaches properly.

Conical or flat base?

• Conical base : suitable for rims with a V-shaped or rounded central channel. This is the most common design.
• Flat or flexible base : essential for flat-bed rims, where a conical base would only make contact at two points and allow air to leak.
• Some wheel brands (Mavic, DT Swiss, Hope, Spank) supply a valve specifically designed for their rim profile: always use it when available.

Presta or Schrader?

• Presta : the standard for MTB and road cycling. Slim and lightweight, it requires a 6.5 mm rim hole.
• Schrader : the automotive standard, also found on entry-level MTBs and children's bikes. 8.5 mm rim hole.
• A Schrader hole accommodates a Presta valve using a reducer grommet. The reverse is not possible.

The removable valve core: not to be overlooked

A removable core lets you inject sealant with a syringe without unseating the tyre, inflate with high airflow to seat the tyre bead onto the rim, and clean the valve body. For regular tubeless use, this is the most time-saving feature. Keep a core remover tool in your saddle bag.

Maintenance

Sealant dries inside the valve body and eventually clogs it. Every time you top up, remove the valve core, clean it, and make sure the airway is clear. Service kits include replacement valve cores, seals, and caps, which are far cheaper than a new pair of valves.
