Rear Derailleur – Which Sprocket?

The rear derailleur is part of the bike transmission and the complete groupset of a road bike. As with the front derailleur, its role is to move the chain to change the gear ratio (distance covered per full crank revolution) depending on the cyclist's level and the difficulty of the route. The rear derailleur is responsible for changing sprockets (or gears). Unlike a track bike (single speed and single chainring) a road bike can have up to 11 sprockets and the rear derailleur's role is to move the chain from one to the other.
