Tubular tyres – Comfort and feel

The tubulars are among the tyre types found on bicycle wheels. Unlike the traditional tyre, the inner tube is directly integrated into the tubular. The casing is actually sewn around the tube and the whole assembly is glued directly onto the rim. The system is lighter than the tyre + inner tube + rim tape combination, but that is not the only advantage. The tubular is also renowned for its rolling efficiency, its resistance to pinch flats and the comfort it provides. It also allows the use of lighter wheels. Its only drawback is that it is less easily repairable than a tyre. You have to unsew it to repair the inner tube inside and then sew it back up neatly.
 

Tubular tyres - The ancestor of the tyre

The tubular, less practical, has become less common since the invention of the bicycle tyre. But it has not disappeared! The tubular continues to coexist alongside the tyre, having slightly changed its purpose. Today it is more aimed at competition, even if a few die-hards continue to use it in training. Its light weight is all the more interesting for competitors as it is associated with a rotating component (the wheel). Its rolling efficiency and comfort (more supple than a tyre) also provide better sensations on the road.
