Road bike chainring – Tempted by an oval chainring?

The road bike chainring fits on the crankset, at the heart of the bike drivetrain ! The characteristics of the chainring (geometry, tooth profile) determine the cyclist's pedalling style and the range of gears they can use. Traditionally round, the road bike chainring has, under the major influence of Pro Team Sky (Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome), been revived in oval form in recent years! Its benefit lies in the elimination of the famous "dead spot" in the pedalling cycle, when the cranks are vertical. Road bike chainring – Which chainring combinations?

When replacing a worn model for example, choosing a new road bike chainring raises the key question of its tooth count. This should be decided according to each rider's experience and preferred terrain. Fitted on cranksets triple chainrings, the smallest available models (around 30 teeth) are aimed at cyclists wishing to tackle steep climbs without overexerting themselves. As for experienced cyclists, they will manage on all terrains with the standard 39/50-51-52 combination of double chainring cranksets! Do you want to push a big gear and express your full power on exclusively flat terrain? The road bike chainring is also available in 54, 55 or 56 teeth!
 

Road bike chainring – Make sure it is compatible with your drivetrain components!

When changing a chainring, compatibility questions also arise: with your crankset (4 or 5 arms/bolt circle diameter for fixing the crankset spider) and with your groupset. As they do not offer a complete groupset, chainring brands other than Shimano, Campagnolo and Sram do indeed offer models compatible with the components (cassettes 9, 10 or 11-speed) of the bike drivetrain, signed by one of the three major manufacturers.
