How to choose 26-inch MTB tyres

26-inch is no longer the modern MTB standard, but it still equips a huge fleet of bikes, dirt jump and street rigs, and larger kids' MTBs. The range focuses on proven classics: Maxxis Minion and DTH, Schwalbe Nobby Nic and Rocket Ron, Hutchinson Python and Toro, Continental Race King and Cross King.

Which tyre width should you choose?

• 2.00 to 2.15 : cross-country and fast trail riding, prioritising efficiency and low weight.
• 2.20 to 2.35 : the sweet spot for versatility, offering the best compromise between grip and rolling resistance for trail use.
• 2.40 and wider : enduro, downhill and dirt jump, for volume, traction and bump absorption.
• Check the frame and fork clearance before going wider: older 26-inch bikes often have tight clearance beyond 2.35.

Tubetype or tubeless ready?

• Tubetype : inner-tube setup, the simplest and most economical option. Perfect for leisure or a secondary bike.
• Tubeless ready : tubeless setup with sealant. Fewer pinch flats, lower tyre pressure and improved grip.
• Tubeless requires a compatible rim, airtight rim tape and a dedicated valve. On older 26-inch rims, check that they are tubeless compatible.

Which compound?

• Hard or single-compound rubber : durability and rolling efficiency, ideal for high mileage without frequent replacements.
• Soft or multi-compound rubber : cornering and wet-weather grip, at the expense of faster wear.
• Reinforced casing (Hardskin, Exo, TwinSkin): essential on rocky terrain and for aggressive riding.

Tread patterns: reading the profile

Low, closely spaced knobs roll fast on hardpack and dry trails. Tall, widely spaced knobs bite into loose dirt and clear mud effectively. An intermediate profile handles most conditions. Many riders run a more aggressive tyre up front for steering control and a faster-rolling tyre at the rear for pedalling efficiency.
