How to choose your MTB tyre insert

The tyre insert sits between the rim and the tyre in a tubeless setup. It has become a staple in enduro and downhill, and is gaining ground in trail riding and on electric mountain bikes, which are heavier and harder on rims.

The real benefits of a tyre insert

• It protects the rim : it absorbs bottom-out impacts rather than the rim profile.
• It prevents pinch flats and often allows you to finish a descent even with a flat tyre.
• It supports the sidewall : the tyre squirts and rolls less in hard turns, eliminating that unpleasant tyre squirm at low pressure.
• It lets you run 0.2 to 0.3 bar lower than without an insert, delivering the extra grip and comfort that come with it.

Choosing the right model for your riding style

• 150 to 250 g of extra weight per wheel depending on the model, in unsprung and rotational mass.
• Trickier installation : have sturdy tyre levers ready and allow extra time for your first installation.
• More time-consuming trailside repairs trailside if the tyre unseats.
• Reduced internal air volume : slightly reduce the amount of sealant you add.
