How to choose an electric mountain bike display

The display shows the assistance mode, remaining range and speed. On most bikes, you can replace it without a trip to the workshop — provided you choose the right display-and-mount combination, as the two are sold separately and are not interchangeable.

The Bosch range, from the simplest to the most fully featured

• Purion : small unit near the left-hand grip, combining control and display. The most discreet option, available in 200 and 400 versions.
• Intuvia : highly legible central display, operated by a remote control. TheIntuvia 100 is the Smart System version.
• Kiox 300 and 500 : colour display in the centre of the handlebars, connected to the app.
• Nyon : the most fully featured, with maps and navigation.
• Check the generation: a Smart System will not work on a Classic Line bike, and vice versa.

Shimano STEPS

The displays SC-E5000, SC-E6100, SC-E7000, SC-E8000, SC-EN500, SC-EN600, SC-EN610 and SC-EM800 cover the different generations of STEPS. Some are available in an I-Spec EV, which attaches to the brake lever clamp instead of taking up its own space on the handlebars. Not to be confused with the SC-M9051 and SC-MT800 : these show the gears of an XTR or XT Di2 drivetrain and have nothing to do with motor assistance.

The mount matters as much as the display

• Mounts are available in 22.2, 25.4, 31.8 and 35 mm : measure the handlebars exactly where the mount will go, not at the centre.
• Bosch offers spacer kits to adapt the same mount to a different diameter.
• The cable length matters for Intuvia and Nyon installations: 1,300, 1,500 or 1,600 mm, depending on frame size and internal routing.
• Choose the cable exit at the front or rear of the mount, depending on the direction of the cable routing.
• The complete kits combine a display and mount; individual items are for replacing just one part.

Bike computer and phone mounts

The Smartphone Grip Bosch and the mounts K-Edge position the phone or bike computer in front of the handlebars while leaving the bike’s display in place. On handlebars already crowded with a display, assistance remote and dropper-post lever, it is often the only way to fit everything.

Spare parts

M3 screws, seals, spacer kits and mounts without displays can be ordered individually. A mount cracked in a fall is no reason to buy another display.
