How to choose your 26-inch MTB fork

The 26-inch offering is now down to two main uses: replacement on an existing MTB, and dirt jump/street where this standard remains the norm. The question is therefore not about comparing product ranges, but finding the fork that actually fits your bike.

Measurements to check before ordering

• Steerer tube : 1"1/8 straight on the vast majority of 26-inch MTBs, tapered on late-era models. The headset dictates the type.
• Steerer tube length : measure the original fork's steerer, including spacers. A new fork comes with an uncut, long steerer.
• Wheel axle : mostly 9x100 mm quick release, or 15x100 mm / 20x110 mm on more aggressive setups. The axle must match your front hub.
• Caliper mount : Post Mount or IS on older forks. An adapter often allows you to switch between the two.

Watch the travel

Fitting a fork longer than the original raises the front of the bike, slackens the head angle and completely changes the handling. On a 26-inch frame designed for 100 mm, a 140 mm fork makes the bike sluggish on climbs and puts stress on the head tube that it wasn't engineered to handle. Stay close to the original value.

Dirt and street

Here, the criteria are different: short travel, high stiffness, and a fork that takes hard landings without losing its settings. The Marzocchi Bomber DJ is the benchmark here, with a coil spring and an intentionally simple design — fewer adjustments, fewer things to break.

If nothing fits

On an older 26-inch MTB, it can happen that no new fork fits anymore. A full service of the original fork — seals, oil, possibly the cartridge — is then much cheaper and often gives very satisfying results.
