How to choose road bike tubular tyres

A tubular tyre incorporates its inner tube, sewn into the casing, and is glued onto a specific rim. Still used in racing for its rolling efficiency, comfort and safety in the event of a high-speed puncture. Continental, Vittoria, Tufo and Challenge cover road and cyclocross.

Are my wheels compatible with tubular tyres?

  • A tubular tyre is fitted only on a tubular rim, recognisable by its flat bed without hooks.
  • It is not interchangeable with a tyre, regardless of diameter.
  • If in doubt, note the wheel reference before ordering.

Which width and casing?

  • 25 to 28 mm on the road, for comfort and rolling efficiency.
  • 32 to 33 mm in cyclocross, for riding at low pressure without rolling off the rim.
  • Cotton or silk casing : the best rolling efficiency and ride feel, but more fragile.
  • Nylon casing : more durable, suited to training.

How do I fit it?

  • Gluing is done with tubular tyre glue or with fitting tape, in several layers for glue.
  • Observe the stated drying time: a poorly glued tubular tyre can roll off the rim in a corner.
  • Take a pre-glued spare tubular tyre and tyre sealant spray on long rides.
