How to choose an MTB brake hose

The hose must be replaced after a cut, internal cable routing or a handlebar change. Shimano, SRAM, Magura and Hope each offer their own references, with fittings that are not interchangeable.

Which hose do I need for my brake?

• The brake hose is specific to the brand and often to the generation of the brake: the outer diameter and caliper fitting differ.
• Note the brake reference before ordering, not just the brand.
• A universal hose is available from some manufacturers, but it requires the corresponding olives and inserts.

What length should you allow for?

• Allow approximately 800 to 1000 mm at the front and 1400 to 1700 mm at the rear depending on frame size.
• It is better to choose a hose that is too long and trim it down: a hose that is too short is unusable.
• On a frame with internal routing, measure the actual route before cutting, with the routing guide in hand.

What else do you need?

• A olive and a insert new with every cut: these parts are crushed when tightened and cannot be reused.
• A clean hose cutter to avoid crushing the cross-section and causing a leak.
• The bleed kit and the fluid suitable for your system, as every cut requires bleeding.

After replacement

Always bleed the system, then check for leaks at the olive by firmly operating the lever several times. A bite point that gradually moves in indicates air remaining in the system.
