What is MTB rim tape for?

In an inner tube setup, the rim tape covers the spoke holes and spoke nipples. Without it, or with damaged rim tape, the tube comes into contact with the sharp edges and eventually punctures, often in the same spot with no obvious cause.

When to replace it

• With every rim replacement or wheel rebuilding.
• As soon as it is split, hardened or cracked : rubber ages and loses its elasticity.
• If it has shifted and leaves a spoke hole exposed.
• After a tubeless setup attempt failed, if you switch back to inner tubes.

Standard rim tape or tubeless tape?

• Standard rim tape is a non-adhesive rubber or plastic strip. It can be fitted, removed and refitted. This is what you need for an inner tube setup.
• Tubeless adhesive tape is airtight and single-use. It is required for a tubeless setup, but unnecessarily expensive if you ride with inner tubes.

The right size

Choose the diameter matching your wheels and a width at least equal to the rim's internal width. A rim tape that is too narrow leaves the spoke holes exposed, which is precisely where the inner tube gets damaged.
