How to choose a road rear derailleur

The rear derailleur determines shifting precision and speed. Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo offer mechanical and electronic versions, from like-for-like replacement to a complete upgrade.

Mechanical, Di2 or AXS?

  • Mechanical : reliable, repairable anywhere, with no battery to manage.
  • Shimano Di2 : electrical wiring and central battery, consistent shifting under load.
  • SRAM AXS : wireless, removable battery on the derailleur.
  • An electronic derailleur requires shifters and an ecosystem from the same brand.

What capacity and maximum sprocket?

  • Each model specifies a largest compatible sprocket : 30, 34 or 36 teeth depending on the range.
  • The total capacity must cover the difference between your chainrings plus that of your cassette, with a double chainring setup.
  • A short cage is sufficient for close ratios; a medium cage becomes necessary for a wide range.

Which mounting does my frame have?

  • Most frames mount the derailleur on a derailleur hanger removable and specific to the frame model.
  • Direct-mount drivetrains using the standard UDH mount without an intermediate hanger: the frame must be designed for it.
  • Keep a spare hanger: it is the first part to bend in a crash.
