How to choose MTB brake pads

Rim brakes are still found on older MTBs and some leisure builds. Shimano, SRAM and Magura still supply the corresponding replacement pads.

Complete brake pad or pad insert only?

• The complete brake pad includes the pad insert and pad holder: it is the simplest replacement option.
• The pad insert only slides into an existing pad holder, making it an economical solution if the holder is in good condition.
• Check the mounting system: smooth post for cantilevers, threaded post for most V-Brakes.

Which compound?

• A soft compound grips better but wears quickly, especially in mud.
• A hard compound lasts longer and is suited to general riding.
• On carbon rim, only specific pads are suitable: a standard compound will damage the braking surface.

The adjustment that changes everything

Set the pads with slight toe-in, so that the leading edge makes contact first. This alignment eliminates the characteristic V-Brake squeal and significantly improves modulation. Also check that the pad contacts the rim braking surface properly and never the tyre.
