How to choose your 32-inch MTB tyres

32-inch is the newest MTB standard, born from the pursuit of speed in cross-country. Maxxis leads the way with the Aspen and Forekaster. The range is still limited, which makes choosing simple: width and rubber compound make all the difference.

What the large diameter changes

• Shallower angle of attack : the wheel rolls over roots and rocks more easily, instead of getting hung up on them.
• Higher rollover speed : less energy lost over every obstacle, speed is better maintained on fast-rolling sections.
• Increased stability at high speed and in a straight line.
• On the other hand: greater inertia when accelerating from a standstill, higher weight and less snappy acceleration than a 29-inch.

Which width and tread pattern?

• 2.15 to 2.25 : pure XC and racing, prioritising rolling efficiency.
• 2.40 : XC marathon and fast trail, greater volume, comfort and traction.
• Low, closely spaced knobs for dry and hardpack conditions; more pronounced knobs as soon as the terrain turns loose or wet.

Do you need a dedicated bike?

Yes. 32-inch requires a frame and fork designed for this diameter: the necessary clearance significantly exceeds that of a 29-inch. Certain models in the range also come in 29-inch, allowing a mixed setup with 32 at the front and 29 at the rear on compatible bikes.

Setup

Tubeless is essential here: on a tyre of this diameter, low pressure is the main driver of comfort and grip, and it can only be effectively used by eliminating the risk of pinch flats. Make sure to use a valve of at least 40 mm and a sealant volume suited to the tyre size, which is greater than for a 29-inch.
