How to choose MTB brake cables and housings

A cable that does not slide smoothly causes more loss of braking power than a worn brake pad. Shimano, Jagwire and Clarks offer both individual cables and complete kits for V-Brake and mechanical disc brakes.

Which cable head?

• On an MTB, the cable head is cylindrical (known as a barrel): this is the type that fits flat-bar levers.
• The cable head pear-shaped, which is wider, is designed for road bike levers.
• Some cables are supplied with double-ended heads, to be cut off on the unused side.

Cable only or complete kit?

• The cable only is sufficient when the housing still slides freely and is neither split nor pinched.
• The complete kit includes cable, housing, ferrules and cable guides: it is the logical choice after a few seasons.
• A cable stainless steel resists corrosion better than a galvanised steel cable, for only a small price difference.

Which outer casing?

• Brake cable housings are helical winding, designed to withstand the high tensile forces of braking.
• Never use a derailleur housing for a brake: its longitudinal structure can burst under load.
• A housing with Teflon inner liner significantly reduces friction and lever stiffness.

When fitting

Cut the housing cleanly and reopen the inner liner if it has been crushed; otherwise, the cable will rub from the first use. Fit a ferrule to each end and allow wide bends: this is what ensures smooth braking.
