MTB rim brake spare parts

On a rim brake, it is the small parts that make the difference between crisp braking and a squealing brake. Shimano, SRAM and Clarks supply most of the consumables.

What is replaced most often

• Replacement pads for retained pad holders.
• Cable guides and boots bent, which split and let mud in.
• Return springs and adjustment screws, which determine brake symmetry.
• Parallel adjustment washers, to be refitted in the correct order during reassembly.

The right approach

Note the order of the washers before dismantling: this is the most common reason why a brake pad cannot be adjusted correctly. A new cable guide and a little grease on the pivots are often enough to restore smooth braking.
