How to choose 27.5-inch MTB wheels

The 27.5" size hasn't disappeared in the face of 29": it remains the go-to format for manoeuvrability, smaller frame sizes and the rear wheel on mullet setups. The range available is vast, from XC to downhill.

Why choose 27.5-inch wheels?

Manoeuvrability and acceleration : smaller wheel, so less inertia and a more responsive bike in tight turns.
Small frame sizes : on S or XS frames, 29-inch wheels compromise geometry and rear tyre clearance.
Mullet setup : 29 inches at the front for rollover capability, 27.5 inches at the rear for clearance and manoeuvrability. Today, this is the benchmark setup for downhill.
Downhill and bike park : this format remains the standard for gravity bikes.

Compatibility to check

Front axle : 15x110 mm Boost, or 15x100 mm and 20x110 mm depending on the fork.
Rear axle : 12x148 mm Boost, 12x142 mm, 12x157 mm Super Boost or 9x135 mm.
Freehub body : Shimano HG, Micro Spline or SRAM XD depending on your cassette.
Disc mount : Center Lock or 6-bolt.

Internal rim width

25 to 27 mm : cross-country and fast trail.
29 to 30 mm : all-mountain and enduro, the most common sweet spot for 27.5".
30 mm and above : downhill and bike park, with tyres of 2.50" and above.

Electric mountain bikes

Many e-MTBs are fitted with a 27.5-inch rear wheel. Motor torque and overall weight require e-bike certified wheels, built with reinforced hubs and a denser spoke count. A standard wheel will rarely last under this kind of use.
