How to choose an electric mountain bike remote control

The remote control changes the assistance level without taking your hands off the handlebars. With Shimano, the same family of model numbers also includes controls for Di2 gear shifting: that is the first thing to check before ordering, because two products with almost identical names serve entirely different purposes.

Left or right: two different functions

• Left : controls assistance — Eco, Trail, Boost — and lets you navigate the display. This is the remote control most users are looking for.
• Right-hand, marked SEIS or SIS : control for gear shifting for a Di2 drivetrain or an internally geared hub. It does not control motor assistance.
• A left-hand SW-E7000 and a right-hand SW-E7000 SEIS have almost the same name but entirely different functions: read the full designation.

On the Bosch side

• LED Remote : compact control with LED indicators, designed for the Smart System and requiring no separate display.
• Intuvia remote control : the left-hand unit that controls the Intuvia display.
• As with displays, Smart System and Classic Line are not compatible.

Cable length and mounting

• SW-E7000 controls come with cable lengths of 300, 400 and 700 mm : length depends on internal routing and frame size, not ease of installation.
• SW-EN600 controls are available in different clamp diameter, 22.2 mm or 31.8 and 35 mm.
• The versions I-Spec attach to the brake lever clamp, freeing up space on already crowded handlebars.

Switches and junction box

The EW-SW100, EW-SW300 and EW-SW310 are discreet Di2 gear-shift switches mounted beneath the brake hood or at the end of the handlebars. The EW-EN100 unit is not a control at all: it is an E-Tube network junction used to connect components and run diagnostics.
