How to choose an MTB rim brake lever

A common replacement part after a crash, the cable lever still equips many MTBs and touring bikes. Shimano, SRAM and Title cover most needs.

V-Brake or cantilever?

• A lever V-Brake pulls more cable per stroke: this is what linear-pull brakes require.
• A lever cantilever has a shorter cable pull, suited to cantilevers and road-type mechanical disc brakes.
• Using a cantilever lever with a V-Brake results in hard, weak braking; the reverse makes the brake feel spongy.

What handlebar diameter?

• The clamp must match the diameter of the clamping area of the handlebar, usually 22.2 mm on MTBs.
• Some levers accept an I-Spec or equivalent clamp to mount the shifter.
• A complete pair ensures symmetrical adjustment; when buying individually, specify the side.

Material and adjustments

Forged aluminium withstands impacts better than entry-level composite. A reach-adjust dial lets you adjust the lever-to-handlebar distance, useful for small hands and one- or two-finger braking.
